Getting planning permission within the grounds of a Grade II listed building was never going to be straightforward — and believe me, it wasn’t! Our original plan was to make use of the existing 1950s garage. It wasn’t listed, it was failing and, on paper, it seemed like the obvious place to start. But after two unsuccessful applications, it became clear that we needed to completely rethink our approach says Kerrie Griffin Award Winning Interior Designer.

When I bought this beautiful Grade II listed farmhouse, I had a vision to breathe new life into a historic home while preserving its character and soul. Every beam, every colour choice, every antique piece and every room has been thoughtfully designed to create a luxurious yet nostalgic escape.

Good design isn’t just about making things beautiful, It’s making better use of what you’ve already got.

A successful redesign isn’t necessarily about knocking down every wall or creating the biggest possible rooms.

It’s about asking:

How do you actually live here?

Where do you enter? Where do you naturally walk? Where do you want to sit? Where does the light come from? Which rooms need to be close together? Which existing services can be retained? And which changes will genuinely make the house feel better?

In this dorma bungalow, the answer isn’t simply to make the kitchen bigger.

It’s to completely rethink the relationship between the rooms.

Creating A Country Bathroom From Scratch.

Before we started The Spenford House Project - Master Bathroom renovation the house had 1.5 bathrooms the main bathroom was accessed off the landing but the other door took you through to another bedroom bizarrely. Sort of a Jack and Jill without access to Jill! The Interior Co Kerrie Griffin.

Big renovation or restoration projects often stall before they even begin — too many decisions, conflicting advice, and the constant fear of getting it wrong, especially with period or listed properties.

That’s where we come in. Kerrie Griffin Interiors.

Two years ago, I embarked on what would become one of the most demanding — and ultimately rewarding — projects of my career: the restoration of a Grade II listed farmhouse in rural Shropshire.

As both a project manager and interior designer, I understood from the outset that listed buildings are not for the faint-hearted. They come with layers of history, responsibility, and regulation. What I perhaps underestimated was just how testing the process would become when navigating listed building consent and planning departments — particularly when guidance shifted and decisions were revisited mid-project. At times, it felt like moving the goalposts while the match was already underway.

That said, heritage buildings demand resilience, clarity of vision, and a deep respect for their past. Every challenge forced better decision-making, stronger problem-solving, and a more considered approach. The goal was never to impose modern design, but to work with the building — restoring its character, celebrating its imperfections, and ensuring its future longevity.

Creative watercolour painting workshop 🎨

With Award Winning Interior Designer Kerrie Griffin, Join me for a relaxed and creative watercolour painting workshop, perfect for complete beginners and anyone curious to explore their artistic side.

During this hands-on session, we’ll experiment with traditional watercolours, metallic paints and simple doodling techniques, creating a personal sample board filled with patterns, textures and ideas you can refer back to at home. 

From there, we’ll bring it all together to paint charming little doodle birds, full of character and joy.

You don’t need any experience — truly. If you can draw a line, curvy or straight, you can paint a bird. This is a safe, supportive space to try something new, let go of perfection and enjoy the process.

Crafting Workshop at Spenford House 

Join me for a relaxed, hands-on crafting morning at Spenford House, where we’ll be making a rag heart and a dried orange wreath — perfect for adding a touch of handmade charm to your home or gifting with love.

Set in a beautiful creative space, this workshop is all about slowing down, enjoying the process and learning simple techniques you can recreate again and again. No experience needed — just come as you are and enjoy a lovely couple of hours of crafting, conversation, coffee and cake.
