I get a lot of people ask how do I use a room for multi functional purposes. You can divine areas with three things.

1. Rugs
2.lighting
3.Furniture

Decide your areas of purpose ie relaxing area and dining then use large rugs put under day the dining table to define that area and under the sofa are to define the other.
With the clever use of lighting like in this picture by just hanging the lights above a table it creates the area and the same over the sofa area.
