Please read my blog about how I am spending my summer, the fabulous buys for my garden and why I paint my Decking white, not brown!
Create the ultimate home oasis this summer
After an utterly rubbish year last year, it was time to do some self-love. I have chosen the all-singing, all-dancing, speakers, waterfalls and led lights in and out, Palm Spas Colada, hot tub to put a spring back in my step! What have you self indulged on? Tag someone who needs one
Summer is promising heat waves. That means more time outdoors, warmer weather, BBQs, time for gardening, and longer days spent relaxing outside trying to get you back!. That's why now is just the perfect time to make your outside space work for you, says Kerrie Griffin, Interior Designer from The Interior Co. Make your back garden into the special place you will want to be in all summer long, even if it's raining. There's no better way to spend free time wrapped up under a blanket enjoying the fresh air under a canopy or marquee of some sort, making it a place you never want to leave. All it takes is some imagination and some careful planning. Do your research says, Kerrie. Follow our pinboards. I have one just for Gardens on The Interior Co Pinterest. I regularly pin garden ideas and look back on my most creative days to put some of my plans into action.
Gardens done well and well maintained have this way of lifting your soul. I mowed all my lawns yesterday. I have been bark filling my borders, doing a lot of planting and clearing up. So choose a cooler day to garden so that when the sun comes out, you can grab that glass of Champagne and enjoy the fruits of your labour.
Lighting is everything indoors and out. It makes or breaks spaces; it's a good idea in a large garden to have it lit at the further most point away so your eyes will capture the whole garden at night. I have always had what I call fairy lights in my garden since I can remember; it makes a magical place. At the moment, I have some bistro lights from The White Company over my Hot Tub, and they look so dreamy you could virtually be anywhere in the world when the weather is so balmy.
The atmosphere in a garden is so important. Use scented plants to bring memories back. I have honeysuckle at the moment flowering in the hedge next to the hot tub. My friend noticed the gorgeous smell last week when she came around for a long-awaited catch-up and relax in the hot tub after most of her family caught covid. Scents create a fantastic atmosphere for relaxing, plant scented around areas you walk past regularly and entrances and seating areas.
Music is almost certainly a must in my garden; my new hot tub has a speaker, and I love to play French, Spanish and saxophone jazz from it. It is such an incredible feeling of freedom getting lost in the music.
Hot Tub Therapy is a must for stressed bodies after a hard day at work. The smell of the warm balmy hot tub gets you in the mood for a well earned relaxing evening. I light a few candles put my integral speaker on playing some Spanish guitar or french cafe Piano music. I grab my bikini a glass of Champagne usually and contemplate how far I have come and what I have achieved.
When it comes to Decking, I am the ultimate Decking snob! I want to feel the indoor outside. I want my Decking to be an extension of my home, just another place to drape myself and relax!. So I choose to paint all my decking projects white to give me that instant happy summer holiday feeling. I always use ordinary sawn and planed timber in long lengths. I never use Decking. Firstly it's twice the price of wood, and secondly, get a bit of water or frost on it, and you will quickly lose your footing. I have tried many types of paint, from Sanderson hardwearing outdoor wood paint to Dulux masonry paint, and in essence, you have to paint it once a year to keep it looking good. I usually do this in May as a priority, and as soon as I have done it, I use it immediately, and summer starts for me then!.
Accessories are everything in an outdoor space. I have put an indoor huge white painted willow heart on a french grey wall, and it looks fabulous. I have also dotted around candelabras and storm lamps and had some decking lighting inserted into the wood. I have shocking pink chair cushions. Everything else is white, so it gives that perfect pop of colour.
