Bathroom Feature

Client 85-year-old Lady, 2nd floor Apartment in listed Building

Budget 5 – 8 k

Brief

Remove old bathroom including replacing bath for a shower for safety reasons as client has had several falls getting in and out of the shower and lives on her own.

The design was based around being clutter free and creating as much storage as possible. The height of the room needed bring down as it was cold feeling and stark with white walls. There had to be safety assessments to make sure there was enough room around everything to avoid tripping and falling. The floor was lino, and the bathroom suite was 30 years old.

The flat is only 1 bedroom although the rooms are large, but storage was a huge issue there was a freestanding blue cupboard which house a manner of things from tools, bedding, etc.

Halfway through the process the boiler was condemned from use, so we had to use some of the bathroom budget to pay for a new gas boiler which cost £2600 so that left me with the difficult task of creating a super modern bathroom glamorous enough for a Georgian listed property with safety in mind, so I set about using my knowledge of the industry to still fulfil the clients brief to support their needs.

I had located a bathroom company of high-end Italian suites which were auctioning off some stock, over a period of several weeks and 9 auctioned I had everything I needed to start the job, I shopped around and found some less expensive tiles I also used floor tiles on the wall to create a feature. They liked Duck egg blue and wanted the walls white, but with the room being tall and thin this just added to its cold feel, so I painted the walls ceiling and skirting board in drop cloth by farrow and ball to create a lovely warm feel to the room. I also used a tall radiator towel rail to replace an old radiator to give a smooth clean look with chrome fittings in the shower and taps. The taps I bought were LED so when the water is cold it would be blue, the right temperature is green and hot is red, this is a great solution for the elderly and children alike.

The result was amazing when the client first saw it she cried she said she would never have though it would look like this a high end hotel feel bathroom.

She was especially delighted with all the storage I had created by moving the shower on the opposite wall to which required a lot more work we were able to add a large freestanding double cupboard which had the capacity to fit everything in and more, by adding the sink with the two draws more storage was created and by using the space created behind the new false wall which supported the new shower after it had been moved we were able to create two large storage shelfs for cleaning products and toilet rolls so everything is off the floor and no unsightly items or hordes of toilet rolls.

Tiles Used

I used this floor tile on the wall, It is a Laura Ashley tile so I can only assume it was bought by Tiles Direct when they closed.
